It turns out the Denver Broncos’ flaws run much deeper than Josh McDaniels, a reality that became painfully obvious after the team’s 43-13 loss to the woeful Arizona Cardinals yesterday (recap via The Associated Press). A look through the NFL.com box score reveals few bright spots, with six turnovers providing some insight into the lopsided defeat. “I didn’t play very well. I turned the football over, which we knew going into the game was one of our keys,” quarterback Kyle Orton tells The Denver Post. “I thought the defense played hard, and the offense, we didn’t give us a chance to win.”
The situation was so bad that fans in the University of Phoenix stadium were calling for the Broncos to play rookie quarterback Tim Tebow. The Post’s Woody Paige thinks interim coach Eric Studesville should have played Tebow but that owner Pat Bowlen and team executive Joe Ellis are telling him not to.
Meanwhile, Post columnist Mark Kiszla goes out on a limb to call this year’s Broncos team the worst in 40 years. Mile High Report agrees it’s bad, but finds some silver linings, nonetheless, including a new manager and head coach. And, as ESPN reports, John Elway is expected to make a comeback very soon, this time to the team’s executive staff.
