In this fast-paced, everyone’s-out-for-themselves world, it’s refreshing to find a place like Boulder Family Farms. This four-acre operation on the edge of Boulder is home to an old-fashioned farm stand that works on the honor system. Owner Jade Sabatino and partners Melanie Goldbort and Dennis Kline are intent on “connecting people to the land” and ensuring that healthy, nutritious, and high-quality produce is available to everyone.
The self-service stand, which offers farmers’ market-quality food at a reduced cost, is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It works like this: Fill a bag with what you need (price, origin, and distance are marked on the price tag) and pay at the box in the center of the stand. Write a check or make your own change.
All of the produce is certified or noncertified organic and it comes from the surrounding acres or oversupply from local farms such as Abbondanza Organic Seeds & Produce, Cure Organic Farm, and Aspen Moon Farm.
Bonus: Purchase a full or half-share CSA and Sabatino (a former chef at Burnt Toast, Chautauqua Dining Hall, and other Boulder venues) will throw in recipes and fresh fruit from the Western Slope.
