Fox Sports’ “Best Damn Sports Show Period” is holding an on-line contest, asking Denver residents to name the best (damn) sports bar in town. Normally, I’d ignore a promo like this, but we take our sports bars very seriously in Denver, and I have a strong opinion on this one.
The best has to be Choppers Sports Grill in Cherry Creek. They have comfortable patio seating with good views of TVs and their nineteen draft beer choices are enough to satisfy this beer snob, er, connoisseur.
But what really sets Choppers apart from the crowd is its incredible collection of Denver sports memorabilia, much of it collected by the bar’s namesake and co-founder, the late Robert “Chopper” Travaglini. Chopper built his collection while he was the trainer for the Denver Nuggets during their glory days. Among the many items on the walls of Choppers are autographed pictures of old school NBA stars, some posing with Chopper himself. More than any other sports bar in town, Choppers celebrates Denver’s legacy as a sports town, and that makes it my personal favorite.
