Violence against gays, lesbians, and transgenders in Colorado was on the decline last year. But despite a new federal hate-crime law resulting from the murder of Angie Zapata in Greeley two years ago, there’s still a reluctance to report incidents, according to KUNC radio. And the National Coalition of Anti-Violence logged 110 hate crimes in 2009 versus 131 in 2008, writes Westword, which also brings to light a new case in Denver. “Mabel,” a “genderqueer,” was bicycling home last year when two carloads of men pulled up, knocked her off her bike, and beat her as she curled into a ball. The police, Mabel alleges, were also gruff, suggesting that the beating was her fault for riding her bicycle in a park at night. As the Zapata anniversary nears, Westword notes, local filmmakers with Loco Lane Filmworks are hoping to increase awareness around hate crimes with a new documentary called Photos of Angie.
