Former University of Colorado star runner Jenny Barringer continues to rack up accolades for her prolific career. She will be named the state’s college female athlete of the year during this year’s Colorado Sports Hall of Fame banquet in April, reports Boulder’s Daily Camera.
This is the second consecutive year Barringer (pictured) has earned the title, after once again becoming the NCAA champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, setting an American record, notes The Denver Post. She also set six NCAA records and seven CU records in 2009, on top of running the fastest mile in the world (4:25.91) in the 2009 season, her first Big 12 Indoor title.
Barringer is among six athletes who will be recognized at the banquet. Vail’s Lindsey Vonn, arguably the best women’s downhill skier in the world, will take the event’s top honor.
Vonn won her second straight overall women’s World Cup Championship and two gold medals in the World Championships in 2009. She’s carried that high level into 2010 and sits as the overall World Cup standings leader.
This year’s other Hall-of-Famers include Air Force Falcons hockey forward Jacques Lamoureux, the top male college athlete in 2009, who scored 53 points and led the Falcons to the NCAA eastern regional finals last year. Bryan Peters of Rocky Mountain High School and Shelby Babcock of Legacy High School have been named the high school male and female athletes of the year, respectively, and TJ Trump will get the 2009 Disabled Athlete Recognition Award.
