I’ve had several recent conversations with Bev Funaro, who has asked me to delete our blog item and discussion regarding the death of her daughter, Mallory. It’s never easy hearing from someone who has been inadvertantly hurt by something we’ve published, which made it all the more difficult to tell Mrs. Funaro that I won’t be removing the item.
There’s no question that the story and discussion are troubling. But taken as a whole, I think they offer some valuable lessons about personal responsibility and the life-and-death consequences of our actions. As I told Mrs. Funaro, when my own son is a few years older, this is a story I’ll want him to read and think about carefully.
Pulling the story won’t bring back Mallory Funaro, but I honestly do believe that this kind of discussion could help prevent a similar tragedy in the future.
