The Brewery: Epic Brewing Company
3001 Walnut St.
The People: Brewmaster Kevin Crompton
The Space: Epic Brewing Company first opened in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2008. Recently, the company was looking to expand and settled on Denver as the location for its second taproom and brewhouse, in part, because of the Mile High City’s growing beer culture. “It feels like the epicenter of craft beer to us,” says Jennie Richau, who manages Epic’s Denver taproom. Located a block south of The Walnut Room in the River North neighborhood, the five-month-old brewery has a high ceiling and plenty of windows, which gives the space a bright, open feel.
The Brews: This first thing you’ll notice about Epic’s tap list is that it’s, well, extensive. (After all, this isn’t a startup brewery.) There are more than 25 beers on tap in just about any style you can think of: big, barrel-aged beers; classic lagers; sours; pales ales, and even IPAs on nitro taps.
Buzzed Trivia: Epic Brewing Company produced three beers specifically for the Colorado market: Blue Ski Lager, Escape to Colorado IPA, and RiNo Pale Ale. Local graffiti and tattoo artist Think426 designed the label for Epic’s RiNo Pale Ale.
Sample This: Big Bad Baptist (an imperial stout aged brewed with cocoa nibs and coffee, and aged in whiskey barrels).
Take Home: Select Epic brews are available to be filled in growlers to go. Don’t have a growler to fill? There’s a cooler near the front door that’s well stocked with a variety of Epic bombers that start at a shockingly well-priced $3.99.
