On Thursday night in New York City, 5280 was awarded its first-ever National Magazine Award from the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) in the Personal Service category for our October 2018 feature, “The Art of Dying Well,” which was edited by Deputy Editor Lindsey B. Koehler and Features Editor Kasey Cordell. This award recognizes magazine journalism that serves readers’ needs and aspirations.

Otherwise known as the Ellies, the National Magazine Awards is one of the most prestigious honors in journalism. 5280 has received nine Ellie noms over its 25-year history.

“We are so humbled and honored to be recognized in this way, and we are lucky to be able to do this kind of storytelling at a time when this industry is undergoing such massive change,” said Geoff Van Dyke, 5280′s editorial director.

In announcing its selection, ASME judges said, “5280 handled the intricacies of dying and presented information everyone needs (from writing a will, to navigating hospice care, to preparing a green funeral) without fear or gloom. ‘The Art of Dying Well’ was exactly what a personal-service package should be—well reported, well written, well designed, with practical advice on a subject of importance—and won 5280 its first National Magazine Award.”

5280 was up against four storied national publications for this year’s award. Marie Claire was nominated for “Marie Claire’s Guide to Having a Baby“; Outside was nominated for “Rewilding the American Child“; Cosmopolitan was nominated for “Birth Control: Will It Become the Ultimate Luxury?“; and Women’s Health received a nod for “You’ve Got This, Mama.”

As award season heats up, staffers at 5280 Publishing have found plenty of reasons to celebrate. Earlier this week, 5280 picked up a record 18 nominations from the City and Regional Magazine Association (CRMA), ranging from General Excellence to E-newsletter and Spread Design. The winners will be announced at CRMA’s annual conference in May. Additionally, 5280′s latest book, Mile High Stories: 25 Years of Our Best Writing, was recently selected as a finalist for a Colorado Book Award. Winners will also be announced in May. Earlier this month, 5280′s sister publication, Colorado Parent, picked up 14 awards at the Parenting Media Association (PMA), in categories ranging from Website Excellence and Interior Photography to Nontraditional Story Form Feature and Personal Essay.
