We’re all about wardrobe items that pull double duty—and the fashion gods seems to agree with us. Many of fall 2016’s most popular trends are totally suitable to be rocked now. That’s because designers are no longer focusing their autumn collections on cold-weather pieces; instead, they’re increasingly trading cashmere and wool for lightweight cottons and linens. Meaning you can get more wear out of every piece. Here are five perfect-for-fall items that you can immediately put into rotation. And when the cooler weather arrives, just do what every fashionista in Denver is expert at: dress in layers.
Butterfly prints may seem like a springtime trend, but they’re everywhere for fall. Skip the pastel hues (to keep the design from heading into overly sweet territory), and try it in black and white. Equipment’s butterfly print silk sleeveless blouse with tie neck (pictured, above) can be worn with everything from jeans to skirts. When you feel a chill in the air, throw a jacket or V-neck sweater over it. $218, Blush, 1411 Larimer St., 303-399-7779, shop-blush.com
The shirtdress has been a wardrobe cornerstone this summer. To extend a mini version into fall—like this one by Tularosa—wear it as you would a tunic: Layer it over a white turtleneck, and then throw on an oversized coat or jacket. Finish the look with a menswear-inspired flat. $170, Melrose & Madison, 3420 W. 32nd Ave., 303-458-3704, shopmelandmad.com
Military-influenced garb never goes out of style, but this season designers are embellishing everything from jackets to coats and capes with fashionable “medals” (think: appliqué bows, stars, and ribbons). This Cinq à Sept cotton jacket is great for cool summer evenings in the city or for layering over a lightweight sweater during high-country adventures. $540, Moxie, 5936 S. Holly St., Greenwood Village, 303-694-0773, moxieinstyle.com
Cozy, casual outerwear pieces translate to more than sporty hoodies or fleeces (though we love those too). If you’re looking for an upgrade, check out this cotton and viscose trench by SEN Collection. This softly structured coat with a two-tone draped lapel and just-below-the-knee length comes with a multitude of styling options; pair it with jeans, leather leggings, or sleek skirts and dresses. $154, Strut, 3611 W. 32nd Ave., 303-477-3361, strutdenver.com
Neutral hues give your wardrobe maximum longevity, but “neutral” doesn’t have to mean basic or boring. This gray high-low tank with a draped back by Brochu Walker is a great layering piece because of its lightweight mix of linen and rayon. Wear it with skinny jeans or a slim-fitting midi skirt now, and layer it over a thin long-sleeve T-shirt or turtleneck come fall. $310, Rebel, 5910 S. University Blvd., Greenwood Village, 720-283-1004, shoprebel.com
