Where: Abend Gallery
When: October 5–26
Opening Reception: October 5, 6–8 p.m.
What: You might not be able to travel to Europe this fall, but that doesn’t mean you can’t see phenomenal examples of artwork inspired by Western masters and their techniques. New Works by Jivan Lee
Where: William Havu Gallery
When: November 16–January 11
Opening Reception: November 15, 6–9 p.m.
What: If cooler temperatures have you wishing you could return to summer road-trip season, this exhibition of Western landscape paintings might be just what you need. Taos-based artist Jivan Lee makes most of his work on location, so each piece is like a souvenir of his travels. In his depictions of billowing clouds and craggy mountains, he uses silicone spatulas—and occasionally his fingers—to add layers of oil paint and create texture.
Home, is a Place Called Home
Where: RULE Gallery
When: through November 2
What: Born in Trinidad and Tobago, contemporary artist Renluka Maharaj splits her time between Colorado and New York City—so it’s no surprise that her work asks viewers to consider their understanding of home. In this striking exhibition of embellished photographs, the University of Colorado Boulder alumna weaves elements of mythology and Hindu iconography into everyday scenes to explore themes including colonialism, family, and feminism.
West by West: Teresa Elliott and Jill Soukup
Where: Gallery 1261
When: October 5–26
Opening Reception: October 5, 6–8 p.m.
What: Animal lovers shouldn’t miss this show—both Teresa Elliott and Jill Soukup draw inspiration from fauna of the American West. Soukup, a Colorado State University alumna, specializes in painting the livestock and lifestyle she’s seen while living on ranches throughout the region. Elliott paints portraits of her bovine subjects as they appear in the rural environments of the Southwest.
The Power of Line, Chris Hill Solo Exhibition
Where: Tansey Contemporary
When: October 26–December 7
Opening Reception: Oct. 26, 2–4 p.m.
What: For Chris Hill, the line isn’t only an important component of 2-D art. At this solo show, the Santa Fe–based artist showcases a new collection of abstract, geometric sculptures. To make each piece, Hill engages in a balancing act, painting the surfaces of his sculptures a soft ombré to counteract the angular quality of their forms.
