Even though coronavirus is the illness on all of our minds right now, it’s also regular, old cold and flu season, which means some of us are stuck at home with Kleenex and Netflix (and not because we’ve been quarantined). If the old adage to “feed a cold” for a speedier recovery is true, Denver’s restaurants are here to offer a wealth of more nourishing options than Lipton chicken noodle. While you shouldn’t venture out when you’re sick, each of the delicious soup offerings below are available through a delivery service. (And the cocktail is there for you when you’re back on your feet.) So, order up: Your stomach will thank you for the nourishment and your fellow Denverites will thank you for staying home.
Roasted Duck Noodle Soup from Onefold
Full-bodied bone broth is the star of this soup from Uptown area’s Onefold. The restaurant usually has a pot of the broth “going at all times,” according to owner Mark Nery, who says that he loves having it himself when he’s under the weather. The broth is made from long-simmered duck bones that cook overnight with onions, star anise, ginger, and scallions. The ginger will help fight inflammation, and the soup also comes with lots of leafy greens—all of which will likely make you feel like you’re sipping on a bowl of future good health. Available via delivery from Postmates; 1420 E. 18th Ave.
Chicken Noodle Soup from Moxie Eatery
You definitely don’t have to be sick to appreciate the deep flavor of this classic concoction from Moxie Eatery on Broadway, a deeply chicken-y, slightly peppery soup with tender poultry and house-made egg noodles. Chef-owner Dylan Moore credits the flavor to the fresh noodles and cooking with whole chickens. He says it’s “grandmother approved,” if the actual grandmas who regularly stop into his little diner and rave about this soup are to be believed. Available via delivery from GrubHub, Uber Eats, Doordash, and Postmates; 70 Broadway, #150
Spicy Tonkatsu Ramen from Corner Ramen
Apply spice to knock out cold symptoms, I’ve always been told—but I crave Corner Ramen’s spicy tonkatsu ramen even when I’m feeling my best. I swear, it has fended off the start of a cold thanks to the rich pork broth, tender pork belly, and the temporary decongesting powers of the chile oil in the broth’s miso base. Available via delivery from GrubHub and Uber Eats; 1629 Bruce Randolph Ave.
Tom Yum Soup from Aloy Modern Thai
This beloved dish from Aloy Modern Thai is the kind of elixir that leaves your lips tingling and your throat coated after each bite, surely chasing those cold symptoms away. The generous chunks of onion, mushroom, and your choice of chicken, Kobe beef, tofu (my favorite), shrimp, salmon, or mixed seafood will fill your belly without feeling too heavy, and you’ll taste the spicy, herb-infused broth no matter how congested you are. Available via delivery from Uber Eats, Doordash, and GrubHub; 2134 Larimer St.
Take Your Medicine Cocktail at the Family Jones Spirit House
When you feel healthy enough to leave the house, take your medicine by sipping this aptly-named drink at the Family Jones Spirit House in LoHi. This refined take on a traditional hot toddy contains Stopgap Jones Bourbon, lemon, and honey, plus lapsang souchong (an ancient Chinese black tea) that gives the cocktail a soothing, smoky finish. Pro tip: Order it hot and your formerly sore throat will rejoice. 3245 Osage St.
