I stick to a reasonably healthy diet the majority of the time. But when I’m going to splurge, I want to make every calorie count. At a recent visit to Sugarmill in RiNo (part of Troy Guard‘s TAG Restaurant Group family) I discovered the doughnut sundae, aka the Holy Grail of diet-busters. This decadent treat is worth every drip, drizzle, and crumb.
Although Sugarmill is known for desserts, executive pastry chef Kelly McGeehan has outdone herself with this one. The sundae features a freshly fried brioche doughnut as the base, which is topped with scoops of rich sea salt–caramel ice cream (from Boulder’s Ice Cream Alchemy). The dish is drizzled with warm house-made caramel and chocolate sauces, and crowned with a glazed doughnut hole. The contrast of the hot, tender doughnut against the cool, salty ice cream makes for a heavenly eating experience.
Just don’t try and order this sundae on a Sunday—that’s the only day Sugarmill is closed.
