Denver International Airport has long been one of the busier airports in the country and currently ranks fifth in traffic behind Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Dallas. But the airport has also expanded its role on the international travel scene. In this month’s 5280, we take a look at DIA’s international flight offerings to places such as Tokyo, Reykjavik, and cities in Europe. DIA also just released a report on passenger traffic, which shows that international travel jumped 14 percent in September 2013 when compared to the same month in the previous year.

Kim Day, DIA’s aviation manager, points to the recent addition of United’s nonstop flight to Tokyo as a big reason for the bump. “Passengers are recognizing that our Denver to Tokyo flight provides convenient one-stop service to all of Asia, not just Tokyo,” Day said in a statement. “Over the first three months of service, the top destinations accessed by the flight were Singapore, Bangkok, Seoul, Hong Kong, and Taipei.” Traffic on the Tokyo flight has already increased 40 percent since it was launched this summer. Now, if we could just get more direct flights to Europe.
