We’ve already given you the low-down this month on Warby Parker—the eyeglass line with a purpose—but closer to home, local Allison Grenney is showing how to empower girls through education with her handbag line EduKate.
Named in honor of her grandmother (yes, Kate), Grenney decided to create a socially conscious business after traveling post-college to Africa, Southeast Asia, and Vietnam, where she saw firsthand the issues women struggle with: poverty, malnutrition, health issues, and sex trafficking. Her adventures also uncovered how many well- intentioned nonprofits are limited in fulfilling their mission because of funding shortfalls. Her answer: create functional products that support the mentorship of girls in developing countries (one of the keys to breaking the cycle of poverty).
Perfect for the beach, gym, a weekend outing, or even the local farmers’ market, these locally produced, sturdy canvas totes ($72) come with multiple handy pockets, both inside and out. Currently available in four striking colorways—my favorite is the royal blue and spring green—about $16 of every EduKate bag goes to support girls’ education programs in Guatemala, Cambodia, and Tanzania. It’s a simple equation: You + EduKate Tote = education for girls. You do the math.
