As hundreds of mourners gathered Tuesday to remember 12-year-old Kayleah Wilson, the girl’s 18-year-old former boyfriend sat in jail facing charges of having sex with a minor. Authorities apparently don’t think the man is Wilson’s killer, and his appearance in court was a sideshow ignored by those in Greeley remembering a girl who wanted peace and forgiveness in the world. About 450 people sat and stood in the Plaza Hotel and Conference Center Ballroom to hear a pastor try to explain why she was killed and then dumped in a drainage ditch in southeast Greeley, according to The Denver Post. “Some things in life don’t make sense,” says Pastor Arron Chambers. “Kayleah should be hanging out now. She should be laughing. She should be listening to Celtic Thunder on her iPod. Some things just don’t make sense” (via the Greeley Tribune). Meanwhile, a Weld County judge has waived a motion to reduce bail for Robert Laurencio Montoya, who faces felony charges, including sexual assault, for allegedly having an ongoing sexual relationship with Kayleah, according to 9News. He remains in custody. April Wilson, Kayleah Wilson’s mom, said last week that she had stopped the relationship in February when she learned about it.
