Opening Night of Denver Fashion Week Exhibit | February 2
Not to be confused with the actual Denver Fashion Week (that’s coming in March), this exhibit at the McNichols Civic Center Building shines a spotlight on DFW’s 10-year history. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at past runway shows, and local designs will also be on display. The opening night reception is February 2, 6 to 9 p.m. Registration is encouraged. Colorado Mountain School Avalanche Awareness Clinic | February 5
If backcountry skiing is your pastime—or you want it to be—this free clinic is an absolute must. Experts trained by the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education will provide an introduction to avalanches, covering snowpack analysis, different types of avalanches, decision-making, and weather considerations, among other topics. Cripple Creek Ice Festival | February 9–17
Get away from the city and into the mountains for the 12th annual Cripple Creek Ice Festival. This year, the theme, “Super Heroes in Ice,” will feature famous superheroes. Some ice sculptures will be interactive (think ice slides and an ice maze). Be sure to check out the concurrent Ice & Art Fest at the Cripple Creek Heritage Center. 25th Annual Chinese & Vietnamese New Years Celebration | February 9–10
Ring in the Chinese New Year with a weekend of festivities including dragon dances, a tai chi performance, and children’s fashion shows. The bulk of the festivities will take place on February 9, with performances from the National Martial Arts Academy and the Colorado Asian Cultural Heritage Center. LoDo’s Legend of Karaoke | February 14–23
Time to share your shower vocals with the world. This karaoke tournament hosted by LoDo’s Bar and Grill offers three cash prizes to the top three finishers—but first, you have to audition. Day of Remembrance for Japanese Internment | February 15–17
Consider the past with this special event series from the Mile High Chapter of the Japanese American Citizens League. Art and artifacts from the Japanese American National Museum will be on display, and two films will be screened and then discussed with the filmmakers. Filmmaker Satsuki Ina, who was born in an internment camp, will deliver a keynote presentation followed by a Q&A with the audience. The event is being hosted by History Colorado. If starting your own a cappella group is on your bucket list, here’s the perfect opportunity to expand your vocal abilities. 2019 UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup | February 22–24
Come to Civic Center Park for a weekend of right-before-your-eyes ice climbing competition. Hosted by the American Alpine Club, this is the finale of the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup season—and it’s being hosted in Denver for the first time. The Pillars of African-American Art Songs | February 22
The Blair-Caldwell African-American Research Library is collaborating with the Denver Art Song Project for an educational performance curated by Stephanie Ann Ball for Black History Month. Arvada WinterFest | February 23
Don’t let the name fool you—this festival is about more than snow and ice. The second annual Arvada WinterFest in Olde Town Arvada is a celebration of the variety of cultures in the local community.
