The ubiquitous posters in neighborhoods throughout Denver advertising the 18th annual Furry Scurry seem to have paid off. The two-mile walk in Washington Park on Saturday—which drew about 10,000 humans and 5,000 dogs—raised a cool $1 million for an estimated 25,000 cats, dogs, and other small animals in the area looking for loving homes (Denver Post).
Add to that total over 30 dogs recently driven across the country to Denver from flood-damaged parts of Arkansas: The Denver Dumb Friends League took the rescued canines into its shelter to give them checkups and any necessary shots (Fox 31). Larimer County will take in three of the pooches, and the Humane Society of Boulder Valley will house 14. The dogs will be up for adoption as early as this week. “We had our own disaster last fall with the Boulder wildfires,” says spokeswoman Kim Sporrer, “and know what it’s like when your shelter is getting full and the community needs your help, too” (9News).
