Shake It Up

Four Denver spots are transforming the classic milk shake into something magical.

À La Mode
To take your slice of pie to Willy Wonka–esque territory, ask the folks at Humble Pie to whirl it up with some Sweet Action ice cream. The smooth buttermilk banana cream, chocolate–peanut butter, and butterscotch pies blend best. Tip: If you order a cream-topped slice, have the extra cream removed before it goes into the blender—it can be too much of a good thing.

For Adults Only
We love the whiskey milk shake from the Kitchen [Next Door] for its boozy goodness. Boulder’s low-key, farm-to-table pub blends Jim Beam with vanilla (which is our preference) or chocolate ice cream to create a seriously indulgent nightcap. For an upcharge, bartenders will substitute your favorite whiskey for the Beam.

Midnight Snack
Punch Bowl Social mixes decadent, alcohol-infused shakes in an effort to cure the late-night munchies. Try the Ginger Snap: an over-the-top combination of vanilla ice cream swirled with orange and ginger liqueurs, drizzled with salted caramel, and served with gingersnap cookies. There’s also a can’t-miss bourbon and candied bacon option called the Maker’s Squeal.

Breakfast Of Champions
Sassafras, Jefferson Park’s brunch mecca, offers an impressive list of milk shake fixin’s—including Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cap’n Crunch, and chocolate-dipped bacon. Order a shake with your garnish of choice and the treat will arrive shortly in a mason jar. You’ll need a spoon, not a straw, for this one.
