Can olive oil be scandalous? You bet it can—and if you read Tom Mueller’s book Extra Virginity, you know it is. Join me for the Food Lover’s Book Club on Wednesday, June 18, at the Cherry Creek library for an in-depth discussion about the book, the olive oil industry as a whole, and the elixir’s vital role in the Mediterranean way of life. Accompanying me will be Steve Lewis, founder of Boulder-based Giuliana Imports. Lewis brings not only first-hand knowledge of the industry, he is also friendly with the De Carlos, one of the families featured in Mueller’s book. (In fact, Extra Virginity was one of the reasons Lewis launched his company.)

Plan on tasting three beautiful oils (including one from the De Carlos) and leaving with an understanding that olive oil isn’t just for sautéing. Furthermore, the book—and our conversation—aligns with Denver’s annual Greek Festival, which takes place June 20–22.

Bonus: Lewis will provide tips on purchasing olive oil, including how to read all those confusing labels.

Next up: Pick up a copy of Smoke & Pickles by Edward Lee for the August 20 Food Lovers Book Club. The guys behind the Real Dill pickle company will gather to discuss the nuances of pickling—and they’re already putting together jars of goodies to give away. Join me in reading, cooking, and chatting all things food. Feel free to post book suggestions in the comment box below.

6 p.m., Ross-Cherry Creek Branch Library, 305 Milwaukee St., 720-865-0120. Parking is always at a premium in Cherry Creek but the June 18 Book Club coincides with Yelp Bicycle Meet Up in Cherry Creek. If you can, ride your bike to show your support.
